Position Summary

AmeriCorps EXL offers a meaningful opportunity to support students' academic growth and personal development while being part of a dedicated team making a lasting impact in schools. Students are at the heart of our work. We are seeking proactive, adaptable, enthusiastic, and dedicated AmeriCorps EXL Mentors to support the academic and social emotional development of students in local area schools of Napa, California. We partner with schools to identify students who would benefit from a positive, adult role model. EXL Mentors play a key role in leading Active Recess activities with students. Each Member is placed at one school site upon hiring to serve for the entire school year (commuting among school sites is not a daily requirement.)

Program Overview

AmeriCorps EXL Members serve within the Napa Expanded Learning (EXL) Program and/or the ACE After School Program to provide comprehensive academic, enrichment, and social-emotional support to students. All students at the school site benefit from organized, collaborative games and positive conflict resolution support during recess and lunch. Students identified as needing additional support may be assessed and assigned targeted literacy or math tutoring services and/or placed in a social-emotional mentoring group to help foster student success, connection, and overall well-being.

Essential AmeriCorps Duties

Active Recess:

  • Active Recess: Structured and organized activities facilitated by adults in order to encourage students in games/sports while building conflict resolution skills during the core day and after school.

  • Members are assigned a daily game that they facilitate and engage with students, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors.

Tutoring Services:

  • Provide individualized and small-group academic support in subjects such as reading, writing, and math while helping students build confidence, engagement, and positive learning habits.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to support classroom learning goals, reinforce instructional strategies, and help create an encouraging and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Mentoring Services:

  • Mentors will work with students who need additional support in skill development, relationship-building, and personal growth.

  • Lesson plans are created and implemented by the Mentor, utilizing the provided curriculum.

Expanded Learning & Enrichment Support:

Expanded Learning programs support selected students beyond the classroom and outside the traditional school day through the school’s after-school program, COOL School.

AmeriCorps EXL Members are not traditional after-school teachers or childcare staff. Instead, Members serve as enrichment and engagement leaders who help create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for students while gaining direct exposure to different pathways within education and youth development.

Each AmeriCorps Member will be assigned to support a specific enrichment “track” within the after-school program based on program needs and personal interests. Tracks may include areas such as:

  • Arts & Creative Expression
  • Sports & Athletics
  • STEAM & Hands-On Learning
  • And more!
  • Members will collaborate closely with after-school staff and program leaders to help facilitate exciting and enriching activities for students while developing practical experience in a focused area of education. Through this experience, Members receive direct coaching, mentorship, and ongoing professional development from site leaders and program coordinators.

In addition to enrichment track support, Members continue to serve as positive role models for students by leading active recess activities, supporting student engagement, and building meaningful mentoring relationships throughout the school day and after-school setting.

  • Leadership & Social Emotional Learning
  • Outdoor Education and Recreation
  • Academic Enrichment and more
